We are seeking a passionate and experienced French Teacher to teach across Primary and Secondary levels. Person Specification

Essential:

Role Overview

The Head of School is responsible for the leadership, operational management, and overall success of the British School of Lomé (BSL). Job Purpose: Strategic development of the school's Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision and oversight of the day-to-day operation of that policy with the aim of raising SEN pupil achievement, including pupils who need ESL Support.

 Areas of responsibility and key tasks:

  • Put provision in place to ensure that progress of pupils with SEN improves relative to those without SEN/ESL needs.
  • Support and maintain the SEN/ESL register of pupils.
  • Support all staff in understanding the needs of SEN/ESL pupils.
  • Support departmental developments of SEN/ESL provision.
  • Monitor progress towards targets for pupils with SEN/SEL.
  • Be a role model for pupils through personal presentation and professional conduct.
  • Analyse and interpret relevant school, data.
  • Liaise with staff, parents, with the support of the school nurse when necessary and previous schools to co-ordinate their contribution, provide maximum support and ensure continuity of provision.

Teaching and Learning

  •      Support the identification of and disseminate the most effective teaching approaches for individual pupils with SEN/ESL in collaboration with relevant staff.
  •      Work with staff to develop effective ways of bridging barriers to learning through:
    •  assessment of needs
    •  monitoring of teaching quality and pupil achievement
    • Target setting – IEPs.

Leading and managing

  • advise on and contribute to the professional development of staff, including whole school INSET provision;
  • Provide regular information to the Head of School on the evaluation of      SEN/ESL provision.

Effective deployment of staff and resources

  • advise the Head of School of priorities for deployment of staff, and utilise  resources with maximum efficiency;
  • maintain    and    develop    resources,     co-ordinate     their    deployment    and monitor      their effectiveness in meeting the objectives of school and SEN/ESL policies;
  • work with external agencies to maximise resources made available.

Other professional requirements

  • Co-ordinate all Annual Reviews and reviews of Individual Education Plans and/or where appropriate and attend / chair when necessary.
  •  Attend Year 6 Annual Reviews for a primary pupil with SEN SEN/ESL needs to help facilitate continuity        and progression through the development of a transition program.
  • Exercise a key role in assisting the Head of School with the strategic    development of SEN/ESL policy / provision.

Communication and Reporting

  •  To write reports for parents on the pupils receiving teaching for Special Educational Needs;
  •  To liaise with parents and carers concerning pupil progress and concerns, concerning updates to the IEP, and to be proactive in communication about these issues;
  •  To make recommendations to parents concerning the use of external agencies for identifying SEN.

Professional Knowledge and Development

  • To maintain a thorough and up to date knowledge and understanding of the current SEN/ESL Code of Practice and of the school’s curriculum and policies;
  • To participate in INSET provided by the School and where appropriate to lead INSET on SEN/ESL issues in collaboration with relevant staff;

Overview:

The British School of Lomé is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Primary Teacher to join our dynamic and supportive team. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching in line with the Cambridge Curriculum, incorporating the Shanghai Maths project and Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) methodology. Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Learning:

    • Deliver engaging, creative, and effective lessons across the Primary age range, following the Cambridge Curriculum and incorporating Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) methodologies.
    • Integrate the Shanghai Maths project into the curriculum to promote critical thinking and problem-solving through challenging and real-world mathematical tasks.
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners, ensuring all students make progress in their academic, social, and emotional development.
    • Encourage student-driven inquiry, fostering a culture of curiosity, exploration, and independent thinking.
    • Maintain high expectations for student behaviour, engagement, and achievement, providing a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Curriculum Development and Planning:

    • Plan, deliver, and assess lessons based on the Cambridge Curriculum, Shanghai Maths framework, and IBL principles.
    • Ensure that learning objectives are clearly defined, and student progress is regularly monitored and assessed.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues to review and refine the curriculum, incorporating new ideas and teaching strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
    • Design and implement cross-curricular projects that incorporate inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to explore concepts in depth and from multiple perspectives.
  • Assessment and Reporting:

    • Regularly assess student work using a variety of formative and summative methods, providing feedback that supports growth and development.
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress and share regular updates with parents and colleagues.
    • Participate in Parent-Teacher Conferences and contribute to reports on students’ academic and personal development.
    • Use assessment data to inform teaching strategies and adapt plans to meet students’ individual learning needs.
  • Classroom Management and Pastoral Care:

    • Create a positive, well-organised classroom environment where students feel safe, respected, and motivated to learn.
    • Foster strong relationships with students, promoting their social, emotional, and academic well-being.
    • Support students’ personal development and work closely with parents and colleagues to provide any necessary additional support for those facing challenges.
  • Professional Development:

    • Actively engage in professional development opportunities, keeping up to date with current educational research, methodologies, and curriculum changes.
    • Participate in school-wide initiatives to promote innovation in teaching and learning.
    • Share good practice and contribute to team discussions on how to improve the school’s teaching strategies.
  • School Life and Community:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree in Education or a related field, with a valid teaching qualification.
  • At least 2 years’ experience teaching in a Primary school setting, preferably within an international school.
  • Strong understanding of the Cambridge Curriculum and experience in delivering it at the Primary level.
  • Experience implementing Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) in the classroom.
  • Familiarity with the Shanghai Maths Project or a strong willingness to integrate this approach into teaching.
  • Ability to create engaging and effective lessons that cater to a variety of learning styles and abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Fluency in English is essential.
