Job Description: Nursery Manager - British School of Lomé

Position: Nursery Manager

Location: British School of Lomé, Togo

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Start Date: 15th March 2025

Reports To: Head of Primary

Overview:

The British School of Lomé is seeking an experienced and dynamic Nursery Manager to lead our early years education provision. The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day management of the Nursery, which serves children from 18 months to 5 years of age, including both the crèche and nursery classes. The Nursery is accredited by the UK's National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) and follows the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, ensuring the highest quality of care and education for young children.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and manage all aspects of the Nursery, ensuring it runs smoothly and efficiently, delivering exceptional care and education to children aged 18 months to 5 years.
    • Provide inspirational leadership to the Nursery team, ensuring a supportive and collaborative environment.
    • Oversee the recruitment, training, and professional development of Nursery staff, ensuring they are qualified and up-to-date with best practices.
    • Manage staffing levels and ensure ratios are maintained according to regulatory requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with NDNA standards, EYFS framework, and all relevant local regulations.
  • Curriculum and Learning:
    • Ensure the Nursery curriculum is effectively delivered in line with the UK’s EYFS framework, promoting children’s development across the seven areas of learning and development.
    • Work closely with staff to plan and implement stimulating, child-centered activities that support early childhood development and school readiness.
    • Monitor and evaluate the quality of learning and teaching within the Nursery, providing regular feedback and guidance to staff.
    • Ensure that individual needs are met, including those of children with additional needs, and implement strategies to support inclusive learning.
  • Child Welfare and Safeguarding:
    • Promote and ensure the safeguarding and welfare of all children in the Nursery.
    • Oversee the development and implementation of child protection policies, ensuring all staff are trained in safeguarding procedures and are aware of their responsibilities.
    • Maintain a safe, clean, and healthy environment, both indoors and outdoors, in line with NDNA and EYFS standards.
    • Conduct regular risk assessments and ensure that appropriate health and safety procedures are followed.
  • Parental Engagement and Communication:
    • Build strong, positive relationships with parents and guardians, keeping them informed of their child’s progress and development.
    • Organise regular parent meetings, open days, and workshops to engage families and provide them with the support they need.
    • Ensure effective communication with parents through daily reports, newsletters, and meetings, fostering a partnership approach to children’s care and education.
  • Administration and Budgeting:
    • Oversee the administration of the Nursery, including maintaining accurate records of children’s attendance, development, and assessments.
    • Manage the Nursery budget, ensuring that resources are used effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of the children and staff.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Professional Development:
    • Actively pursue professional development opportunities for both the Nursery team and yourself, staying up to date with changes in the EYFS framework and best practices in early childhood education.
    • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, supporting staff in their career development and helping them reach their full potential.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A relevant degree in Early Childhood Education, or a similar qualification (Level 6 or higher in Early Years Education, or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in a leadership role in an Early Years setting, including Nursery or Crèche management, with at least 3 years of experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of the UK’s EYFS framework and NDNA standards, with experience in implementing these within a Nursery setting.
  • Experience in managing staff, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Strong understanding of child development and the ability to support diverse learning needs.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with staff, children, and parents.
